Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that includes recurring abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea or constipation — or alternating between them — without a structural cause. IBS is very common: an estimated 10–15% of the population has it. The symptoms can significantly affect quality of life and social life.

Treatment is symptom-based and individualized. Diet is a key factor: many people find relief with a FODMAP diet guided by a dietitian. Psychological support helps, as stress worsens symptoms. A general practitioner or gastroenterologist rules out more serious intestinal diseases, such as celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease, before diagnosing IBS.
