Reflux and stomach ulcer

Reflux disease (GERD) means that stomach contents rise back into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation behind the breastbone (heartburn), acid regurgitation, or coughing. Long-term reflux can damage the lining of the esophagus and increase the risk of esophageal cancer. A stomach ulcer occurs when the lining of the stomach or duodenum is damaged.

Treatment uses proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which reduce stomach acid production. Lifestyle changes, such as smaller meals, avoiding high-fat foods, and quitting smoking, help significantly. In prolonged or severe symptoms, an internal medicine specialist or gastroenterologist performs gastroscopy to assess the condition.
