Orthopedics and traumatology

Orthopedics and traumatology is a surgical specialty that treats diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system: bone fractures, joint wear, osteoarthritis, back disorders, and sports injuries. An orthopedist is an expert in both conservative treatment and surgical care.

The most common reason to see an orthopedist is knee, hip, or shoulder pain that does not improve with conservative treatment. The orthopedist assesses the situation using imaging and recommends the most suitable treatment, from physiotherapy to surgery.

Joint replacement surgery is one of orthopedics’ most important areas: tens of thousands of knee and hip replacement operations are performed in Finland every year. In the public sector, waiting times can be months, which is why many people seek private orthopedic care.
