Physiatry

Physiatry is a medical specialty focused on rehabilitation and non-surgical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. A physiatrist’s work emphasizes maintaining the functional ability of people with long-term illnesses, pain management, and planning rehabilitation programs.

Patients see a physiatrist to assess back pain, shoulder and neck problems, symptoms of osteoarthritis, or functional limitations caused by neurological diseases. A physiatrist often coordinates a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team that includes a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist.

Sports medicine and sports injuries are a key part of physiatry in the private sector. A physiatrist may also perform anesthetic and corticosteroid injections as well as other procedures.
