Asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by inflammation of the airways and reduced lung function. Symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest, especially at night, during exertion, or in cold air. About 300,000 people in Finland have asthma.

Diagnosis is made with spirometry and provocation tests. Treatment is based on inhaled corticosteroids, which calm airway inflammation, and, if needed, a reliever medication. Regular medication enables most people with asthma to live without symptoms. An allergy assessment is often needed, as allergens are a common trigger for asthma.
