Cardiac arrhythmias

Cardiac arrhythmias refer to abnormalities in the heart’s electrical activity that can cause palpitations, an irregular heartbeat, dizziness, shortness of breath, or fainting. The most common arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation, which affects about 100,000 people in Finland. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of stroke.

Diagnosis is made with an ECG or long-term monitoring (Holter examination). Treatment depends on the type of arrhythmia: medication, cardioversion, catheter ablation, or a pacemaker are options. A cardiologist plans an individualized treatment program. It is important to seek prompt assessment if arrhythmia symptoms are sudden or severe.
