Cardiology

Cardiology is the branch of medicine that specializes in diseases of the heart and circulatory system. A cardiologist examines and treats coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, valve disorders, and other cardiovascular diseases.

At a cardiologist’s appointment, an ECG, cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography), and an exercise stress test are typically performed. In addition, a cardiologist may refer a patient for invasive procedures such as coronary angioplasty or catheter ablation for arrhythmias.

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Finland, but early diagnosis and treatment significantly improve the prognosis. In the private sector, cardiology examinations can be arranged quickly and flexibly.
