High cholesterol and lipid disorders
High cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) means there is too much LDL cholesterol (the so-called bad cholesterol) or triglycerides in the blood relative to HDL cholesterol. High cholesterol usually does not cause symptoms, but it accumulates in the walls of blood vessels and significantly increases the risk of atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke.
Treatment begins with dietary changes and increased exercise. A nutritionist can help find a heart-healthy diet. If lifestyle changes are not enough, the doctor may consider statin treatment. Blood tests are needed for regular monitoring of the values. The overall risk of cardiovascular disease is always assessed individually.
