Migraine
Migraine is a recurrent, often one-sided headache typically accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to sound and light, and sometimes aura symptoms such as visual disturbances. Attacks usually last 4–72 hours and can be very disabling. About 10–15% of Finns have migraine, and it is more common in women.
Treatment is divided into acute treatment and preventive medication. For mild attacks, an anti-inflammatory pain reliever is often enough, but severe attacks are treated with triptans. If migraine attacks occur several times a month, a neurologist or general practitioner may start preventive medication. Lifestyle factors such as sleep, nutrition, stress, and fluid balance affect migraine triggers.
