A dentist treats diseases and health problems of the mouth, teeth, and jaws. The most common reasons for a visit are cavities, toothache, gingivitis, tooth extractions, and needs related to prosthetics.

Specialist dentists are trained in specific areas such as orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontology, or prosthetics. Dental hygienists are responsible for removing tartar and providing oral health guidance.

In Finland, private dental care is common, as the public sector does not cover all adult dental care. Health insurance reimburses part of the costs of private dental care.
