Gynecology

Gynecology is a medical specialty that focuses on diseases and health of the female reproductive organs, uterus, ovaries, and breasts. Obstetrics, or the study of childbirth, is closely related to gynecology.

People see a gynecologist for things such as a gynecological cell sample (Pap test), contraceptive counselling, menstrual disorders, endometriosis, and fertility issues. Checkups during pregnancy are also a key part of a gynecologist’s work.

In Finland, gynecological care is available in the public sector through child health clinics and maternity outpatient clinics, but in the private sector waiting times are shorter and booking is more flexible.
