Eye diseases

A specialist in eye diseases (ophthalmologist) diagnoses and treats eye diseases and vision disorders. The most common reasons to see an ophthalmologist are reduced vision, dry eyes, glaucoma, cataract surgery, and retinal problems.

An ophthalmologist performs a comprehensive eye examination: visual acuity testing, fundus examination, and measurement of eye pressure. If needed, they refer the patient to an eye surgeon for cataract surgery or laser vision correction.

Private ophthalmology services are popular in Finland. More than 40,000 cataract surgeries are performed in Finland each year, and a large share are done in the private sector.
