Atopic dermatitis and eczema
Atopic dermatitis (atopy or eczema) is a chronic skin disease characterized by dry, itchy, and red skin. It is one of the most common skin diseases in Finland and often begins in childhood. The condition is often also associated with allergy and asthma. Symptoms worsen with stress, heat, sweat, or exposure to allergens.
Treatment is based on regular moisturizing of the skin with emollients and managing flare-ups with corticosteroid creams or calcineurin inhibitors. For severe atopy, a biological medication (dupilumab) is available, which a dermatologist may prescribe. An allergy assessment helps identify triggers. With good treatment balance, most patients are able to live symptom-free or with only mild symptoms.
