Infertility and childlessness
Infertility means that pregnancy has not occurred after one year of trying. It affects about 15% of couples. The cause may lie in the woman, the man, or both: ovarian dysfunction, fallopian tube damage, endometriosis, sperm problems, or unexplained infertility are the most common causes. Age, weight, and lifestyle also affect fertility.
Investigations are started with a gynecologist and a urologist depending on sex. An internist can assess hormonal causes. Treatment options include ovulation induction, insemination (IUI), or in vitro fertilization (IVF). Infertility treatment is often emotionally demanding, so support from a psychologist is valuable during the process.
