Psychiatry

Psychiatry is a medical specialty that studies and treats mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, psychoses, and substance use disorders. A psychiatrist is a licensed doctor who can prescribe medication and make a clinical psychiatric assessment.

Most people see a psychiatrist by referral from a doctor or nurse when mental health problems are severe or long-lasting. In the private sector, appointment times are often shorter than in the public sector, which speeds up the start of treatment.

Psychiatry works closely with psychologists and psychotherapists. In addition to medication treatment, a psychiatrist may refer the patient to psychotherapy or other support services.
