Condition

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue lining the uterus grows outside the uterus, such as on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or peritoneum. It causes severe menstrual pain, pain during intercourse, chronic pelvic pain, and can reduce fertility. Diagnosis is often delayed for years because the symptoms are mistaken for normal menstruation.

The diagnosis is confirmed with laparoscopy. Treatment options include hormone therapy (contraceptive pill, progesterone, or GnRH analogues), which help slow the progression of the disease, as well as surgery to remove the tissue. Pain may become long-lasting, in which case pain-relieving treatment and psychological support are important. The gynecologist plans treatment based on fertility wishes and symptoms.
