Hypertension
Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases in Finland – an estimated one million Finns have it. High blood pressure usually does not cause symptoms, but it significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and heart failure. That is why regular blood pressure measurement is important.
Treatment begins with lifestyle changes: reducing salt, increasing exercise, weight management, and limiting alcohol. If these are not enough, the doctor starts blood pressure medication. Most patients need more than one blood pressure medicine to achieve good control. Regular follow-up with a general practitioner or internist is essential.
