Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to renew rapidly, leading to scaly, red patches especially on the elbows, knees, scalp, and back. About 2–3% of Finns have psoriasis. In some people, psoriasis is also associated with psoriatic arthritis, which can cause severe joint damage.
Treatment starts with creams and phototherapy in mild cases. In widespread or severe psoriasis, the dermatologist may consider systemic medication such as methotrexate, or modern biologic drugs. Biologic drugs target cytokines that mediate inflammation and can calm the skin almost completely. Regular follow-up is important for assessing the effectiveness of treatment.
