Scoliosis and posture problems
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that can be idiopathic (unknown cause), structural, or functional. It is most often diagnosed during growth. Mild scoliosis does not cause symptoms, but severe curvature can cause back pain, breathing difficulties, and cosmetic concerns. Posture problems is a broader term that also includes a hunched-forward posture and other posture deviations.
A physiotherapist guides scoliosis exercise programmes (for example, the Schroth method) and posture strengthening. In children, the progression of the curvature is monitored during growth. Severe scoliosis may be treated with a brace or orthopaedic surgery. Good posture helps prevent neck, back, and shoulder problems from developing.
