Back stiffness
Back stiffness means that back movements are limited and the back feels stiff. It typically appears in the morning or after a long period of inactivity and may ease with movement. The symptom can occur in any part of the back, but it is most often felt in the lower back.
In Finland, the most common causes of back stiffness are tension in the back muscles, poor working posture, too little exercise, and age-related changes. Long-term back problems, such as degeneration of the intervertebral discs or osteoarthritis, can also cause stiffness. In younger adults, a less common cause can be an inflammatory rheumatic disease such as ankylosing spondylitis, in which stiffness is especially pronounced in the morning and improves with movement.
Back stiffness is often benign and can usually be relieved on your own by increasing exercise and stretching. However, if back stiffness is accompanied by severe pain, fever, weight loss, numbness in the limbs, or does not improve with rest and exercise, you should seek a healthcare professional. At the appointment, possible more serious causes will be investigated and suitable treatment planned.
