Coordination disorder and balance problems
Coordination disorder and balance problems mean that control of movements and maintenance of balance have become more difficult. Symptoms may appear as unsteadiness when walking, an increased risk of falling, clumsiness, or difficulty performing precise hand movements. Some people also experience dizziness or a feeling that the environment is spinning.
The most common causes in Finland are age-related changes, such as reduced muscle strength and joint problems, as well as diseases of the nervous system, such as cerebrovascular disorders, multiple sclerosis, or damage to the cerebellum. Disorders of the balance organ in the ear (for example benign positional vertigo), excessive alcohol use, or certain medicines can also predispose to symptoms. If coordination problems begin suddenly, worsen rapidly, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as speech difficulties, paralysis symptoms, or severe headache, it may be a serious condition and care should be sought without delay. Slowly progressing symptoms should also be examined by a professional so that the cause can be determined and treatment started in time.

Frequently asked questions
Why has my balance started to worsen lately?
There can be many causes behind worsening balance, such as aging, disorders of the ear’s balance organ, or problems in the nervous system. If the symptom is new or affects daily life, seek care from a healthcare professional.
Can I do anything myself to improve coordination?
Balance and coordination can often be improved with exercise and balance training, but it is important to first determine the cause of the symptom with the help of a professional before starting self-directed exercises.
When are balance problems dangerous?
If balance problems begin suddenly, worsen rapidly, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as speech or paralysis symptoms, you should seek care immediately.
Can medication cause coordination problems?
Some medicines can cause balance problems or clumsiness as side effects. Talk to a doctor if you suspect your symptoms are related to your medication.
