Symptom

Nausea

Nausea is an unpleasant sensation that may be accompanied by vomiting. It is a symptom, not a disease itself, and there can be many different causes behind it.

The most common causes include gastrointestinal infections, migraine, pregnancy, motion sickness, side effects of medications, stress or food poisoning. Chronic nausea may be related to reflux, irritable bowel syndrome or another gastrointestinal disorder.

Short-term nausea is treated with rest, hydration and, if needed, anti-nausea medication. Prolonged or recurrent nausea requires a medical evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

What helps nausea at home?

Small snacks that avoid greasy foods, ginger tea, a cold drink and fresh air can help relieve nausea. Maintaining fluid balance is important, especially if nausea is accompanied by vomiting. Resting and staying calm help in most cases.

When does nausea require a doctor’s visit?

See a doctor if nausea lasts more than a few days, vomiting prevents you from drinking fluids, there is blood in the stool, or nausea is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, fever or jaundice.

Can stress cause nausea?

Yes. Stress and anxiety activate the nervous system in a way that can disrupt digestion and cause nausea. This is especially common before stressful situations. If it persists, stress-related digestive problems need treatment.
