Sleep disorders and insomnia
Sleep disorders are very common: an estimated one in four Finns will experience significant insomnia at some point in life. Insomnia can appear as difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night, or waking too early. Prolonged lack of sleep impairs concentration, mood and immunity, and increases the risk of accidents.
Underlying insomnia is often stress, anxiety or depression, but physical causes such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome or pain can also disturb sleep. The primary treatment recommended is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which has been shown to be more effective than sleeping pills in the long term. If needed, a doctor can assess short-term medication.
