Ankle pain
Ankle pain is a common symptom that can have many causes. The most common include ankle sprains, where the ligaments in the ankle stretch, for example when the foot twists as you step. The pain from a sprain may increase the next day, and the ankle often swells or bruises. Overuse injuries of the Achilles tendon, such as tendon irritation or inflammation, can also cause pain, especially at the back of the ankle. In addition, ankle pain may occur with exertional compartment syndrome, in which case the pain is felt in the front of the lower leg and worsens with movement.
The most common causes of ankle pain in Finland are related to sports injuries, such as sprains, and overuse, for example when running or walking. Prolonged standing, poor footwear or suddenly starting exercise can also make ankle pain more likely. In some cases, the pain may indicate a more serious injury, such as a fracture, in which case the pain is severe and appears immediately after the accident.
Ankle pain is concerning if it is accompanied by marked swelling, deformity of the foot, inability to bear weight, numbness, or if the pain does not ease with rest. In these situations, it is important to seek assessment from a healthcare professional. Persistent or recurring pain also needs evaluation to ensure the right treatment.
