Elbow pain
Elbow pain is a common condition that can have many causes. The pain is usually felt on the outer or inner side of the elbow and may occur, for example, with exertion, lifting, gripping, or repetitive movements. The most common cause of elbow pain in adults is so-called tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), in which the tendons on the outer side of the elbow become overloaded due to excessive use. Injuries, inflammation, or conditions such as osteoarthritis can also cause pain in the elbow.
Elbow pain can be mild and short-lived, but sometimes it interferes with everyday life and work. The pain may be felt especially during exertion, but sometimes also at rest. Most often the cause is related to excessive strain, for example repetitive work, sports, or suddenly using the arm more heavily. In Finland, tennis elbow is common among people of working age, but the condition occurs at all ages. Less often, the underlying cause may be an inflammatory rheumatic disease.
It is concerning if elbow pain is accompanied by significant swelling, fever, redness, loss of mobility, or a decline in general condition. Prolonged pain or pain that impairs functioning is also a reason to seek assessment by a healthcare professional.
