Sinusitis and nasal problems

Sinusitis, also called inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, is an inflammation of the nasal sinuses that usually develops after a viral infection or as a complication of allergic rhinitis. Symptoms include facial pain, nasal congestion, thick discharge, coughing, and general malaise. Acute sinusitis usually resolves on its own, but chronic sinusitis requires medical evaluation.

An ENT doctor examines the nasal passages with endoscopy and, if needed, with computed tomography. Treatment includes nasal rinsing, nasal corticosteroids, and antibiotics for bacterial infection. In chronic sinusitis or in the case of nasal polyps, endoscopic surgery of the paranasal sinuses is considered. Septoplasty can help if a deviated septum makes breathing difficult.
