Allergy and hay fever
Allergy is an excessive reaction of the immune system to substances in the environment, such as pollen, animal dander, mold spores, or foods. Hay fever (allergic rhinitis) is one of the most common allergies and causes a runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, and nasal congestion. Allergy can also worsen asthma and skin symptoms.
Diagnosis is made with skin prick tests or blood tests (IgE antibodies). Treatment uses antihistamines and nasal sprays to relieve symptoms, as well as allergen immunotherapy, which reduces allergies over the long term. An allergist or dermatologist will design an individualized treatment plan. Symptom control significantly improves quality of life during allergy seasons.
