Depression
Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in Finland. It is manifested by persistent sadness, lack of energy, insomnia or excessive sleeping, loss of interest in things that were previously meaningful, and difficulty concentrating on everyday tasks. Depression affects functioning in many areas and can appear during stressful phases of life or come without any clear external reason.
Treatment is planned individually according to the severity of symptoms. In mild depression, psychotherapy – especially cognitive behavioural therapy – is often sufficient. In moderate or severe depression, medication and therapy are combined. A psychiatrist assesses the need for medication, while a psychologist or psychotherapist provides talk therapy. Seeking help early significantly speeds up recovery.
