Trauma and PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops after a shocking or life-threatening event. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance behavior, hyperarousal, and emotional numbness. PTSD can emerge months or even years after the traumatic experience, and it often significantly impairs functioning and relationships.
Trauma treatment particularly uses EMDR therapy (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, both of which have been scientifically shown to be effective. A psychiatrist can assess the need for medication in severe symptoms. Seeking treatment early helps prevent the trauma from becoming chronic.
