Anxiety and panic disorder

Anxiety disorders are common mental health problems and include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, fear of social situations and various phobias. Symptoms can be intense physical sensations such as palpitations, shortness of breath and dizziness, but also constant worrying, restlessness and avoidance behaviour.

Treatment is most often based on psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioural therapy, where the person practises facing and tolerating anxiety. In more severe cases, medication such as SSRIs complements therapy. The symptoms of panic disorder can resemble heart-related symptoms, so a doctor first rules out physical causes before making a mental health diagnosis.
